Well, we have been home now for 5 days with our little Evan. We had our first outing on Tuesday to visit with the Pediatrician.... Why so soon after leaving the hospital you ask?
When Evan was born he was a healthy 6 lbs 3 oz considering he was born "near term" at 36 weeks gestation. But he had to spend some extra time in the nursery for observation because he was grunting with each breath. This time was tortue for Mom because although Evan was born at 1:33 PM, it was not until 9 PM that she got to hold him for the first time. The diagnosis was healthy lungs, but that he had some amniotic fluid trapped in his lungs due to a c-section delivery. As each hour passed, his breathing improved & our doctor decided he was healthy enough to graduate to the regular nursery & avoid the nic-u. When we departed the hospital on Monday, Evan's weight had dropped down to 5 lbs 8 oz. Although its normal for infants to loose a little weight in their first few days, our pedi was a bit concerned he lost that much weight. So between the weight loss & concerns over his breathing, we agreed to have a follow up on Tuesday at the doctor's office for a check up.
But have no fear, our little stud started packing the pounds back on and was already back up to 5 lbs 13 oz on Tuesday. His breathing continues to look good, although Mom & Dad panick with every cough, spit up, or sound that resembles a grunt. Our pedi was pleased with the great progress - weight gain, good breathing, & no jaundice. We're heading back next Tuesday for a nurses visit just to check that we're still making strides on the weight gain front.
After the great news that Evan was in good health, Mom & Dad treated themselves to lunch at Jake's Grill, a favorite hamburger joint across the street from the doctor's office. Evan obliged by peacefully napping until we got home & setteled.

We celebrated a very small Thanksgiving this year. In year's past, we have hosted feasts for our friends - usually a full spread for no less than 8 - 10 people that usually lasts well into the night. But there was no way that Maureen could "do" Thanksgiving this year. We were very grateful that our good friend Vicki came over & cooked us a traditional Thanksgiving meal. It was a very low key, low stress day that allowed us to focus on Evan while still enjoying a good home cooked Thanksgiving dinner.
Maureen is recovering well from the c-section, getting around better every day. For the last 2 days, the whole family made it out for a walk in the neighborhood. Maureen, Chris, Evan, Zoey, & Zyla all enjoyed the beautiful Houston fall weather. The dogs were certainly happy to get some normalcy back into their lives with daily walks & Maureen felt great to get some form of exercise.
So with each day, we become more settled & more confident. We find ourselves just staring at our cute little miracle and find it hard to believe that we made such a strong, adorable little guy. We are truly thankful for our tiny little Thanksgiving blessing, Evan Francis Gerty.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! (And thanks for posting the Thanksgiving photos on facebook, Vicki!)
Excellent to hear you're all back home and enjoying a bit of normalcy.
Hi Mo & co.
Glad to hear you are all doing so well. Luca, Joey, and I are excellent as well. Luca likewise was born via c-section so we had similar issues with the fluid. He does not have breathing issues but continues to sneeze, attempting to dispel the extra fluid. Scary for new parent who fear the cold weather in NY bringing about illness. Well, lots of love. Can't wait for the cousins to meet
:0)
Hey, any time you all need a meal, I'm your chef. After all the meals you have fed me, beer of yours that I have drank, and nights spent sleeping at your place, it's the least that I could do! Thanks for being such good friends (and putting up with me and my dogs when we are in need!). Glad you enjoyed the meal and pics :) How 'bout more potatos? anyone?
We want comparison shots to see how big Evan is getting!
